STUNNING CATLINITE ANIMAL EFFIGY PIPE ~19th CENTURY
(Item: PIPE CATLINITE)
~ABO 01825RZ
This is a rare and wonderful pipe. The
craftsmanship is fantastic and unique, and we guarantee buyer's
satisfaction!
This pipe came from an estate in North
East Missouri and has been sitting in a box in the basement for the
past fifty years. The owner of the pipe has no recollection of it's
origin or why it was even in the house. He is 94 years old and his
father was a grocer, so it could have been taken in trade, but that is
pure speculation.
The pipe has a wonderful patina to it.
From the late 19th or Early 20th Century, carved from Catlinite, this
effigy pipe looks like a cat or wolf along with a characteristics
of a human nose and eyes. Notice the sharp teeth carved to look like
they are clenching the bowl. The top of the head is missing whatever
originally crowned this creature; probably the Catlinite came to a
point in this spot. On the left cheek and neck of the pipe there is a
lighter color to the stone and we are unsure as to why. There is a thin
line long the neck in the light area that looks like a scratch. Perhaps
someone tried to buff that spot, which may have changed the color in
that area? Any input about this is welcome and can be added to the
listing below.
The stem and pipe are NOT held together
by any 'fitting.' As pictured, we have toothpicks inside the stem to
hold the two together. The stem is also a slightly darker shade than
the
pipe, and slightly smaller in diameter. Though the stem has the same
leaf pattern etched into it as the pipe, the differences indicate the possiblility that it may not be the original stem. We have seen other like etched leaf patterns from Dakota
Sioux pipes. Otherwise, the face of the pipe is in Very Good
Condition. There are a few very tiny nicks around the bowl and a small
nick on the corner of the pipe where the stem and pipe meet. There are
some scratches on the mouth piece of the stem, presumably from where
someone's teeth held the pipe in their mouth. Also, there are the
remnants of old resin inside and on the lip of the bowl. Otherwise,
there are no other cracks or chips on the pipe and overall it is in
Very good Condition. It measures 9 1/2 inches from mouth piece to the
top of the head.
