AMAZING EARLY J MILLER 3 GAL VIRGINIA STONEWARE CROCK
(Item: CROCK J. MILLER)
~SOLD: $2926~
This rare and unusual stoneware crock
is stamped 'J. MILLER.' Our research indicates that this is one of the
J. Millers who worked in the Shenandoah Valley, in Strasburg, Virginia
during the Mid 1800s and was part of the Bell Family of Potters; which
would date this crock Civil War Era. If anyone has more knowledge about
this piece we will be happy to add any input to the bottom of this
listing.
The crock is 3 gallons and is stamped with a '3' below the 'J MILLER'
stamp, on the back side. It is decorated with a fabulous multi colored
salt glaze, two freehand cobalt leaf designs, and a freehand image that
bares a strong resemblance to an Indian or Native American head between
the two leaves? As pictured, it looks like a feathered headdress on the
left side, with the profile of a forehead, nose, mouth and chin pointed
toward the lower right. There is a 'half circle' mark with rough
texture, between the center image and the left cobalt leaf. The body of
the crock has a slight ovoid form and 'ribbed' texture to it; while the
rim has an unusual narrow, oval opening and a red glaze around the
inside. The applied ears have a cobalt decoration on each corner
that appears to have been simply dabbed on.. There are three lines
scribed around the crock, parallel to the ears, and below the bottom
ridge of the rim. These lines can be seen most clearly in picture
number 3. The yellowish, speckled glaze, most prominent around the top
section, is very unusual and adds a wonderful background to the two
cobalt leaves. The yellow speckling extends below the upper mid section
and fades away as it gets lower. There are also some spots of yellow
drippy glaze
The entire crock is only about 5/16 of an inch thick, and makes the
sweetest 'bell' ring when plunked. There are no cracks in this crock.
There are 7 small chips around the outside of the rim. The largest chip
is pictured and measures 1/2 inch in diameter. There are also two
separate flakes on the cobalt where the ears are applied. Otherwise
this crock is in Excellent condition. This is a rare piece of Southern
Pottery, with vibrant color and fantastic form offered at a reasonable
reserve. It measures 13 1/2 inches tall, 9 3/4 inches in diameter at
its widest point. The bottom diameter measures 7 1/4.
The rim measures 9 1/2 inches from ear to ear and 8 1/8 inches
front to back.
